Strangely enough, there is a similar suicide that occurred nearly decades before McFerrin achieved stardom. In 1942, former British Staff Sergeant Felix Powell shot himself in the heart. Powell was best known for writing the music for WWI marching tune “Pack Up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag and Smile, Smile, Smile!”
