Despite its groundbreaking computer animation effects Tron wasn't even nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar.

In 1982, the Academy Award for Best Visual Effects went to E.T. Despite introducing the now ubiquitous practice of combining live action and computer animation in a film, Tron wasn't even considered for the award. In fact, a movie that relies on CG effects wouldn't win this Oscar until 1989's The Abyss. 

Remarkably, and in spite of its reputation, Tronactually only used about 15 minutes of CGI animation. Check out more unusual Tron facts.
