Unlike most species of whales, belugas have cervical vertebrae that are not fused, which allows for a greater range of facial motion. Typically cetaceans (an order of marine mammals that includes whales and dolphins) have smiles that remain in a fixed position, but beluga whales have the unique ability to communicate through a variety of facial expressions.
