In January 1999, Hof ran a half marathon 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle…barefoot! A mere three years later, wearing a normal swimsuit, “the Iceman” swam a distance of 80 meters beneath the ice at the North Pole.
He has also climbed Mount Kilimanjaro wearing just a pair of shorts and set a world record by being immersed in ice for an hour and 44 minutes!
Scientists are baffled as to why Hof’s body does not respond normally to extreme cold. Some speculate that an ancient Himalayan practice called ‘Tummo,’ in which the mind is said to generate body heat, may be the secret to Hof’s success.
