The life cycle of butterflies and moths consists of four different stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. After hatching from its egg, the newly born larva, or caterpillar, feasts ravenously on whatever leaves it can get its thoracic legs on! This is especially important because as an adult moth it will no longer be able to eat since it won’t have a mouth anymore!
The next stage begins when the caterpillar spins a cocoon around itself and becomes a pupa. In time, it will emerge as a mouthless adult! It can survive anywhere from a span of a few days to a few weeks depending on how much energy it stored up as a larva!
