Jerry and David are the website’s creators: Jerry Yang and David Filo. Yang and Filo created the website in 1994 as electrical engineering graduate students at Stanford University. They chose to rename it because they enjoyed its definition, which comes from Gulliver’s Travels by Jonathan Swift: “rude, unsophisticated, and uncouth.”
