A baby alligator’s sex depends on the temperature of its nest

Unlike most birds, alligators do not sit on their nests to warm them. Instead, they allow the nest itself to do all of the work - the plants in the nest give off heat as they gradually decay! It is this variability in temperature that dictates the gender of a mother gator’s hatchlings. If the nest stays warm, males hatch, and if it cools off, females hatch!
