Discharged on October 30th, 1961 in the Novaya Zemlya archipelago, the Tsar Bomba is the most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated. The weapon was apparently capable of the release nearly 100 megatons of energy, but had been purposely weakened prior to the launch. The explosion that resulted was hot enough to cause third-degree burns over half a mile away!
