Female mosquitoes require a blood meal in order to obtain enough protein to lay their eggs. Oftentimes, a single mating session can lead to several sets of eggs being laid, but each new batch requires its own blood meal (hence the frequent biting)!
And what about the male, you ask? A male mosquito lives a fairly short and simple life. Because it does not share its partner’s need for blood, it merely feeds on plant nectar. Unfortunately, the males do not live very long after mating has been completed.
